The fire broke out about 5 a.m. on Arianna Street.
The home had a smaller fire at 4 p.m. Thursday, and it rekindled sometime after 5:30 a.m.
Caledonia firefighters were called to the scene and were able to free the man.
Firefighters were called to the 2300 block of 30th Street SW just after 11 p.m. when a neighbor reported that the building may have been hit by lightning.
The fire was contained to the two-stall garage and an attached shed. One vehicle was damaged. The house did have smoke damage.
